Thanks, Lauren. In these short interviews it’s very tough to get to a persuasive message about changing the culture, although I hope I have done so in the book. The change we need is a broad social movement, starting at the bottom, that alters the norms of behavior with respect to the environment. I think that’s already happening, but it’s not readily evident because the corporate/government forces of the status quo control mass communication as well as law, politics and economics. From the reference frame of that system, people doing good on a local level in their own ecosystems looks like a cute and laudible hobby, not a movement. But I think as more people become empowered, by recognizing the importance of their own actions in shaping the culture, broader positive change could gain momentum. That’s a hope, not a prediction, but I’m afraid it is our only hope.
